The Pupillo Agricultural Estate, founded in 1909 on the Targia Fief, spans a territory of immense archaeological and historical importance (now part of the Archaeological Park of the Dionysian Walls), rich in Greek, Roman, Arab, and Norman artifacts. The property lies close to the Greek colony of Megara Hyblaea and the remains of the Euryalus Fortress, a defensive structure integral to the Dionysian Walls. The estate covers one hundred hectares of varied soil, composed of both volcanic and limestone elements. The vineyards of Moscato, Catarratto, Nero d’Avola, and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive in a green oasis defined by the refreshing sea breeze and irrigated by the clear waters of the Val d’Anapo, delivered via the 40km Galermi Aqueduct. Nino Pupillo relaunched viticulture in the 1990s, creating the Moscato Passito Solacium. Today, his children, Carmela and Sebastiano, continue the mission to revive the DOC Siracusa, which was rediscovered right here in Targia, focusing on sustainable growth with the lowest possible impact on the surrounding landscape.
Cantine Pupillo offers wine lovers an experience that perfectly combines oenology, history, and nature. The guided visit to Castello del Solacium takes guests through the Baglio delle Torri, the intimate Baglio dei Ricordi, the Antico Palmento Hall, and the Historical Garden. The tour also includes a view of a small vineyard near the rural church, whose adjacent Romitorio has four rooms available for overnight stays. The wine tasting, held in the historic cellars, can be paired with a delicious, typical Sicilian light lunch or a local cheese board, creating a refined blend of Mediterranean food and wine culture. In July and August, a series of evening events called Solacium Sunsets transforms the winery into a casual wine bar, with no reservation required.
